From Alex Peters
to UPA 11th Edition Rules
People love to make up rules. "You have to check the disc after a non-
player aided in retrieving it" is a made up rule.
There was a discussion about whether it is legal to be aided in
retrieving the disc here:
http://groups.google.com/group/upa_11th_edition_rules/browse_thread/thread/13886493993688eb/010a2f4a18500ecf?lnk=gst&q=MOVING+DISC#010a2f4a18500ecf
Consensus was that it is legal.
---------
Show me where in the rules it says that after a non-player helps in retrieving a disc it needs to be checked in by defense.
Is there an XIX rule about players who make up rules that dont exist? Or does that fall under XIX.E. novice players and sincere ignorance or XIX.G. not intentionally violating rules?
Props for standing by your convictions.
Brush up on I.B. It's after I.A. after the preface on page 2.
And as Zo always says "don't forget to have fun" |

I do not think it is legal to have anyone who is not on the team taking possession of the disc retrieve the disc. It's because that person is interfering with a live disc. If someone on the team taking possession of the disc were to pick that disc up and drop it on their walk to put it in play, it would be a turnover. It thereby gives that team an unfair advantage to have a non-teammate retrieve the disc by eliminating the chance of that turnover (however small that chance may be).
It's the same as having someone on the sideline retrieve an out of bounds pull and toss it to a player at the brick mark and have him put it in play immediately. I guarantee nobody would allow that, but it's the same thing.
The rules specifically state that using loopholes in the rules to gain an unfair advantage is also against the rules, so as this would give one team an unfair advantage (though small) and it isn't specifically written in the rules, it is against the rules.
And for reference, that IS a live disc:
"A disc is live when players are allowed to move and the disc is subject to a turnover, but the thrower cannot make a legal pass (e.g., walking the disc to the spot where it is to be put into play). For a live disc to be put into play, the thrower must establish a pivot at the appropriate spot on the field, touch the disc to the ground, and put the disc into play."
PS, just because some hacks on RSD think something, that doesn't make it law. I read things on RSD every day that are completely ridiculous. |

hey i have a rules question.
yesterday i saw a huck thrown from right on the sideline so that it was out of bounds for nearly its entire trip down to the endzone. just before it was curving back in, a defensive player ran out of bounds, and while out of bounds hit the disc. The disc did not vary too much and ended up being more of a mac. It came back in bounds and an offensive player caught it to score.
I guess I was wondering if the defensive player touching the disc out of bounds would make it a dead disc or not. I think if an offensive player ran out of bounds and touched the disc it would not be able to be played anymore, right? So what about with the defense.
scrumtralescent thanks,

| Its still playable. Only an out-of-bounds object other than the Defense can make the disc out of bounds. don't feel like looking up the rule but you can trust me. If not, I'll find it at some point for u. |

"A disc becomes out-of-bounds when it first contacts the out-of-bounds area, contacts an out-of-bounds offensive player, or is caught by an out-of-bounds defensive player."
So, yes, that catch was a legal goal. |
